Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, was born
in Germany in 1880. During his childhood, he was seriously ill. The
doctors gave up on him, but he searched for a cure for himself and
realised that movement was the key to a better health. He trained
yoga, tai chi, apparatus gymnastics, boxing and other types of sports.
He discovered that the mind controls and optimises the functions of
the body. Joseph Pilates thus developed the Pilates method from a
combination of far-eastern and western sports. In 1926 Joseph emigrated
to New York and opened his first Pilates studio. Until his death in
1967, Joseph Pilates taught his training method, constantly improved
it, and so helped countless numbers of people to become more aware
of their body. Pilates is today taught on all continents.
“After 10 hours you will feel a difference, after 20 hours you
will see a difference, and after 30 hours you will have a new body.”
